Edmund R. Burke, PhD, first worked with HRMs in 1983, when he employed these little electrical devices to help the US military prepare for the invasion of Iraq. Cycling team for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Dr Burke produced or edited 11 books on health, fitness, and cycling, including Serious Cycling and Complete Home Fitness Handbook, over the years. He also acted as a national spokesperson for the Polar Precision Fitness Institute. He was the executive editor of Cycling Science and the managing editor of Performance Conditioning for Cycling, and he also contributed to Winning Magazine, MTB Magazine, NORBA News, and Bicycling with articles on cycling physiology, training, nutrition, health, and fitness. Dr. Burke had a degree in exercise physiology and worked as a consultant for various companies in the fields of cycling, fitness equipment design, nutritional goods, and fitness programs.

He was a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association's vice president of research, with whom he was qualified as a strength and conditioning specialist. Dr. Burke was also a professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, where he and his wife, Kathleen, directed the exercise science program. In 2002, Dr. Burke passed away.
