Our Bulawayo Scrapbook by Robert S Burrett

Established in 1893, Bulawayo is Zimbabwe's second largest city. it takes its name from the precolonial Ndebele settlement of Kobuluwayo which was captured by the forces of Cecil John Rhodes. Profusely illustrated, this book provides a general discussion of the historical development of the town and its various communities, and then goes on to discuss the unique structural features of the inner city area of Bulawayo. Street by street the buildings and monuments, past and present, are discussed, together with dates, architects, developers and owners and tenants where these are known. The book aims to provide a historical snapshot of the evolution of the cityscape of Bulawayo from its African colonial roots to post independence developments up to 2023.
Rob Burrett is a Zimbabwean archaeologist, historian and environmentalist. He has worked for and assisted the Zimbabwean Museum Authority for just under 40 years, as well as working in the education sector, teaching and lecturing at various Zimbabwean schools and universities. Rob is passionate about heritage education and the need to share academic knowledge with the general public. Born in Bulawayo, Rob was whisked away at an early age to Beira, Mocambique and then spent many years in Salisbury/Harare. In 2004 he returned to Bulawayo where he was inspired to investigate and document the cityscape of the city. Walking the streets and accumulating photographs and documents from various sources, he has brought them together as a tribute to the city he loves.
