Summary
In 1985 Hudson visited the village of Dulaba in the Gambia to help in some field studies there. He was so intrigued by what he saw that he decided to return. The book tells of the lives of the women, devout Muslims, who are circumcised in an all-female ritual, but who sing ribald songs.

Our Grandmother's Drums by M Hudson
West Africa. Blinding white light, dust and scrub, salt flats and mangrove swamps, a village called Dulaba in the Gambia. People are scratching a living out of rice, groundnuts, millet. At the appointed time, the women beat their grandmothers' drums and go to the bush for the circumcision rituals. No man is allowed. . . . . . . To Mark Hudson, a casual visitor, Dulaba in 1985 was a fascination; its stark landscape vivid with the presence of its women. What were their lives, bounded by Islam, by female circumcision, by the necessity to work in the fields and to obey first their mothers and then their husbands? Out of his year in Dulaba has come a wonderful book. Reading it is like watching a picture being painted. . . . . A moving, evan a majestic book' Listener
Mark Hudson was born in 1963 into the small village of Bloomfield N.Y. nestled between Rochester with its once roaring economic engines of Kodak, Xerox, and Delco and the peaceful hills of New York's southern tier. Unhappy with college and the numerous odd jobs while trying to pay his way, Mark joined the Army reserves. He had a love hate relationship with the Army, and going active in 1986 he switched his MOS (military occupational specialty) and received an airborne slot, serving in the 82nd airborne with the now de-activated (Bill Clinton) Bco. 4/325. I seemed to go up three ranks and go down two. I had/have no patience for those who lead without any ability to do so. A career ending knee injury on a jump into Panama for JOTC (Jungle Operations Training Center) caused Mark to return to civilian life in 1989 where he began a career in retail investigations (see his book 'A Retail Investigator' for some insight.) Mark has written short stories his entire life but is the self-admitted worst speller in the world and until the computer; his life's writing was 2/3 spent in the dictionary. Living in Arizona, enjoying the weather, his wife and pets; Mark continues to look for news that can be used for his Gordan Hudde series; a hard charging ex-soldier with the ability to 'fix' wrongs.
