She is the mother of A Long Way Gone bestselling author Ishmael Beah. Laura took her storytelling work to New Orleans twice as part of a Mercy Corps grant for teachers and children in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. She has started a storytelling project in Haiti with International Medical Corps.
