Out of Darkness by Russell Freedman

An extremely well-written and informative book that tells about Braille's life and the development of his alphabet system for the blind. Freedman's gift for making his subjects both accessible and intriguing comes through wonderfully in this book. Readers learn not only about Braille and his struggle to communicate thorough the written word once he lost his sight, but also how long it took for his revolutionary innovation to become universally accepted. Finely detailed pencil drawings and diagrams appear throughout the readable narrative. An entertaining and fascinating look at a remarkable man.

Russell Freedman (1929-2018) revolutionized nonfiction for children with his incisive narration, thorough research, thoughtful photography, and in-depth knowledge of his subject. He was well-known for his engrossing biographies and superb descriptions of American history. His many awards include the Newbery Medal, three Newbery Honor Medals, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, the May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture Award, and a National Humanities Medal, to name a few. Freedom Walkers, Lincoln: A Photobiography, Because They Marched, The Wright Brothers: How They Created The Aircraft, and Vietnam: A History of the War are among his major publications.
