In this second edition the reference book has been brought up to date with much new material, while still covering the whole span of literature in German-speaking countries from eighth century to 1985. The treatment of contemporary trends and authors in the German Democratic Republic has been considerably expanded, and there has been extensive modification and re-evaluation of articles in the first edition in the light of subsequent research and scholarship.The late Henry Garland, who died before the Second Edition was published, was Professor Emeritus of German at the University of Exeter. Mary Garland (joint author of the Companion from its first conception) was Reader in German at Exeter until her retirement.
