The Oxford Dictionary of American Legal Quotations by Fred R Shapiro

Whether in a modern legal case or a Hollywood courtroom drama, the successful practice of law rests heavily on incisive, pithy, and often witty language. This collection of more than 3,000 thematically arranged quotations includes pronouncements from leading judges and legal commentators, as well as hundreds of quotations from literature, the movies, and popular song. Here Oliver Wendell Holmes, Clarence Darrow, and Abraham Lincoln share the pages with Mark Twain, Will Rogers, Kurt Vonnegut, Woody Allen, and Bob Dylan. The most scholarly and complete reference work of its kind, it also includes extensive author and keyword indexes, and is a must for lawyers, students, and anyone interested in the legal system.
'sounds dull but is brilliant.. It deserves a place on every British lawyers bookshelf ... it's an excellent anthology of the wisdom of transatlantic justices, such as Oliver Wendell Holmes.' Piers Brendon, The Independent on Sunday
'an often fascinating miscellany ... The editor ... has done his work with admirable thoroughness: sources are meticulously identified, citations comply with standard legal citation forms ... a treasury of writing on law that invites random reading for pleasure.' Times Literary Supplement
'For any lawyer with a sense of humour, or a sense of perspective, the Oxford Dictionary of American Legal Quotations is an excellent late Christmas present.' David Pannick QC, The Times
Fred R. Shapiro has been the assistant director of the Yale Law School Library since 1987 and is a Lecturer in Legal Research at Yale Law School. He has written widely on legal language and legal research, and is a consultant to the Oxford English Dictionary.
