The Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar by Sylvia Chalker

English grammar is a complex minefield. This reference comes to the aid of both the general reader and the student or teacher, offering immediate, alphabetical access to 1000 grammatical terms and their meanings. All currently accepted grammatical terms used are included, as well as older, traditional names, many controversial new coinages, and items from the study of other languages, or the wider subject of linguistics, including phonetics and transformational grammar. The definitions are accompanied by detailed explanations including examples of language in use, and frequent quotations from existing works on grammar.

Bas Aarts is Professor of English Linguistics at University College London. He has published many books and articles on English grammar, most recently the Oxford Modern English Grammar.

The late Sylvia Chalker is the author of several grammar books, including Current English Grammar and The Little Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar. She was also a contributor to The Oxford Companion to the English Language.

Edmund Weiner is Deputy Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary and co-author (with Andrew Delahunty) of the Oxford Guide to English Usage.
