JENNIFER HAHN relies on wild gathering to keep her pack and kayak light after more than 25 years of wilderness travel, including through-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail from northern California to Canada and solo kayaking from Ketchikan, Alaska, to Washington. She has a bachelor's degree in science. Western Washington University's Huxley College of Environmental Studies, as well as a B.A. She earned her bachelor's degree in literature and ecology from WWU's Fairhaven College, where she studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Annie Dillard and interned at Audubon magazine. Jennifer later launched Elakah Kayak Adventures, a kayak and natural history company.
She's guided trips in Washington, Canada, Alaska, Baja Mexico, and the Galapagos Islands, among other places. Spirited Waters: Soloing South Through The Inner Passage, her debut book, was awarded the Barbara Savage Miles From Nowhere prize for adventure narrative writing in 2001. Feasting on Flotsam: Dining Between Tides, Fields, and Forest as Cuisine, Culture, and Ecology, which she presented for the Washington Commission for the Humanities Inquiring Mind Lecture Series in 2003, took her across Washington State speaking and serving up wild delicacies. She is currently teaching classes on northwest wild food as an adjunct professor at Western Washington University's Fairhaven College.
Her latest Mountaineers Books titles, Pacific Feast and Pacific Coast Foraging Handbook, were inspired by her passion for foraging. Sea urchin, nori seaweed, and goose tongue leaves are Jennifer's favorite foraged meal. She and her potter husband, Chris Moench, live in Bellingham, Washington.
