Painted Ladies by Nick Hedges
A stunning collection of hand-coloured cards from the early decades of the 20th century. During this time, the picture postcard provided an immediate and direct form of cheap communication. Made by anonymous photographers and hand-coloured by thousands of unknown women, these cards became one of the most popular forms of art. Painted Ladies proves a colourful and fascinating insight into the fashion, culture and interests of the early 20th century. This is the perfect gift book and makes fascinating inroads into this mesmerising art form.
Born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, Nick Hedges studied photography at Birmingham College of Art. He subsequently worked in London for Shelter, the National Campaign for the Homeless as a photographer and researcher. After a period as a freelancer he returned to the Midlands to document factory work (published as 'Born to Work', 1982). He lectured on Photography at the University of Wolverhampton until 2002.
