There she meets another time-lost person from Earth, Lieutenant Hieronymus Bonaventure of the Royal Navy - who left home to fight the forces of Napoleon and never returned - and Balam, outlaw prince of the jaguar men. They agree to help Chirikov find a way home.

Chris Roberson has been nominated for the Sidewise Award, World Fantasy Award, and John W. Campbell Award. The Campbell Award for Best New Writer is given to the best new writer. He earned the 2003 Sidewise Award for Best Short-Form Alternative History for his work O One, which appeared in Life without a Net (Roc, 2003).
