Paralogues by Evan Jones
Featuring translations of several works as well as original poems, this poetry compilation explores Greek mythology in addition to Roman and Byzantine history, art, and travel. The myth of Actaeon is re-imagined in three ways throughout the book and concludes with a retelling of the Byzantine folk ballad Constantine and Arete. In this debut collection, real and imagined people and places also crop up: the lonely figure of the poet Cavafy in Victorian Liverpool and God in postwar Paris as well as the landscapes of Europe and North America.
'Evan Jones is an intelligent, allusive poet who has elegantly synthesized his roots in Greek cultureThese quietly serious poems throw up glimpses of dream and myth, and do so in a context of real thoughtfulness, free of rhetoric but rich in formal control.' - Fiona Sampson
Evan Jones edited New Canadian Poetry, Introductions: Poets Present Poets and most recently, Opening the Island, Anne Compton's debut collection of poetry. His work has appeared in Descant, the Malahat Review, and Queen Street Quarterly. Nothing Fell Today But Rain is Jones's debut collection of poetry.
