In the 1960s, William Shepherd studied classics at Clare College, Cambridge, before embarking on a career in publishing that eventually led him to Osprey, where he served as chief executive until 2007. He is the author of The Persian War (Cambridge, 1982), a Herodotus translation. He has also authored children's books and essays for the Osprey Military Magazine, which he co-edited, and he contributes to the Osprey blog on a regular basis. He resides north of Oxford, in the Cherwell Valley.
