Passing by Nella Larsen
Absolutely absorbing, fascinating, and indispensable. -- Alice WalkerA work so fine, sensitive, and distinguished that it rises above race categories and becomes that rare object, a good novel. -- The Saturday Review of Literature
Married to a successful physician and prominently ensconced in Harlem's vibrant society of the 1920s, Irene Redfield leads a charmed existence-until she is shaken out of it by a chance encounter with a childhood friend who has been passing for white. An important figure in the Harlem Renaissance, Nella Larsen was the first African-American woman to be awarded a Guggenheim fellowship. Her fictional portraits of women seeking their identities through a fog of racial confusion were informed by her own Danish-West Indian parentage, and Passing offers fascinating psychological insights into issues of race and gender.
Nella Larsen (1891-1964) wrote two novels, Quicksand and Passing, as well as various short tales. In 1930, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to write her third novel, but after failing to find a publisher, she dropped out of the literary scene and went to work as a nurse in New York City. Ntozake Shange is a playwright and poet from the United States. Shange is a critic of the Black Arts Movement and a black feminism. She majored in American Studies at Barnard College then went on to UCLA to pursue a master's degree in the same discipline.
For colored girls who have thought suicide/when the rainbow is enough, her most famous work, which received the Obie Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the AUDELCO Award, traveled from Off-Broadway to Broadway and won the Obie Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the AUDELCO Award. Mae Henderson is a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill English professor.
