Pattern by Emma Bridgewater

(Amadeus). With an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and Washington Post music critic Tim Page Penned by veteran music writer, critic, and Grammy nominee Alan Rich, currently a music critic for the alternative paper LA Weekly, this book is a collection of music criticism gleaned from four decades of concert-going, opera-going, and record-listening on both coasts. Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and Washington Post music critic Tim Page provides the book's introduction. Included are reviews and essays on musicians, both well-known and obscure, who have shaped worldwide musical tastes during those years: conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Esa-Pekka Salonen; performers Glenn Gould and the overexploited David Helfgott; composers both familiar (Baroque masters, Mozart, Schubert) and contemporary (John Adams and John Cage). Probing essays include lively insights on music criticism itself and on where (if anywhere) music may (or may not) be heading in the new millennium. His writing drew from the formidable Virgil Thomson praise as the most readable music reviewer . our best muckraker.
Emma's recollections about the geneses of her iconic spongeware patterns - from multi-coloured polka dots to leaping rabbits - are well written, revealing and charming.. the patterns in this book are largely Emma's own, hence her meandering reveries, which elevate this book from a mere catalogue of designs to something of a memoir. * House & Garden *
Beautiful... Emma would modestly describe herself, not as a master potter, but as a 'grubby industrialist with a factory making useful everyday ware'. But really, that self-effacing description fails to capture the delight and charm of the uniquely British brand celebrated in Pattern, and the simple joy her designs have brought to millions. * The Lady *
No one understands pattern and design quite like Emma. This gem of a book celebrates her passion for British ceramics, her beautiful design and joyful pattern. * Kirstie Allsopp *

Emma Bridgewater established her successful pottery business in 1985. She found a manufacturer in Stoke-on-Trent to produce a range of mugs, jugs and teapots inspired by traditional shapes and spongeware designs. She now employs over 230 people and continues to make all her ceramics in Staffordshire, the historic home of pottery manufacture in Britain. Emma is married with four children and lives outside Oxford, where she was brought up.
