Paul Metcalf was a prominent poet and author who wrote more than twenty works, including Apache, Patagonia, and The Middle Passage. He was the great-grandson of Herman Melville and a pupil of Conrad Aiken and Charles Olson. Metcalf, who was eighty-one years old at the time of his death, died in January 1999. John Casey is the Henry Hoyns Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Virginia, where his novel Spartina won the National Book Award.
