A wide range of essays which explore pacifism through its relations to modern ideologies and contemporary issues. The seven sections include chapters examining how pacifism relates to a wide variety of topical issues, from racism and feminism, to the environment and defence. Profiles of individual peacemakers such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Vera Brittain are included as well as a section on different pacifist organisations. While some of the essays are existing pieces, others have been especially commissioned, and contributors include Sir Michael Tippet, Joan Baez and Harry Mister.
Tony Aygarde is a member of the Peace Pledge Union's Campaign and Development committee, and is also Departmental Manager of the English Dictionaries at the Oxford University Press and author of the Oxford Guide to World Games.Cyril Wright is a conscientious objector, who has recorded his experiences on tape for the Imperial War Museum. He spent ten years as a community farmworker, market gardener, and teacher. He has been active with the PPU since its inception.
