Peepo Choo: Volume One by Felipe Smith
Felipe Smith, the first American to make it in the Japanese manga big leagues, returns to the West hitting a grand slam with his Japanese debut. When teenage Otaku Milton first sets foot in the heart of Tokyo, he is shocked to see hustlers and prostitutes instead of the cosplaying crack-ups of his favourite cartoons and comics. Where is his animated version of Tokyo? How could he not have known about this dark side? And if he can't find what he was looking for, why did he go in the first place?!Felipe Smith was born in the state of Ohio in 1978. Felipe hails from the most improbable of backgrounds for a manga artist published in Japan, having been raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Felipe was the school's artist, despite the fact that he was educated in an international school where other students were playing soccer and basketball. Felipe studied at Chicago's Institute for the Arts after moving to the United States for college, where he was exposed to a variety of creative styles and types of visual animation. Felipe's art style is a unique blend of East and West that is distinctively Felipe, influenced early on by hyper-real designs prevalent in Heavy Metal and later on by cartoon aesthetics found in Japanese animation.
IMAGE and TokyoPop have published Felipe's work, with his first serialized comic MBQ getting critical acclaim. Felipe went on to win a slew of comedy accolades, propelling him to international prominence. Felipe is now based in Tokyo, where he is now sketching his cultural clash romance for Kodansha's experimental comic anthology magazine Morning Two.
