Robert Allen is an experienced lexicographer and writer on language, now working form Edinburgh. After ten years on the Oxford English Dictionary he edited a major new edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary, was an associate editor of the Oxford Companion to English Language and directed work on Chambers 21st Century Dictionary. As a freelance writer and editor he has been a consultant for a number of major publishing houses. He has written an updated version of Fowler's Modern English Usage and has contributed articles on the modern use of English in English Today and other journals. He is the consultant editor for all Penguin English Dictionaries, and an honorary research fellow of the Department of English Language at the University of Glasgow.
