James Matthew Barrie was born in Scotland in 1860. His older brother tragically died at the age of fourteen after a skating accident, and his mother derived consolation that he would be a boy forever. Though Barrie never had children of his own, he knew many, and he based the character of Peter Pan on five brothers of the Llewelyn Davies family. Peter Pan was first written as a play, and popularised the name 'Wendy'. He died in 1937 and gave the rights to the Peter Pan works to London's Great Ormond Street hospital, which continues to benefit from them.
