His works have received numerous prizes and distinctions from critics and readers alike: Noah's Ark earned the Caldecott Medal, and The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night was a Caldecott Honor Book. People received the Christopher Medal, was nominated for an American Book Award, and was honored by the National Council of Christians and Jews with the National Mass Media Award for exceptional contributions to improving human relations and the cause of brotherhood. Spier grew up and went to school in Amsterdam. He served in the Royal Netherlands Navy before arriving to the United States.
His work may be seen in museums and private collections across the country, and he illustrated over a hundred books. In addition to illustrating and writing, Spier was an accomplished model ship builder. At the age of 89, Peter Spier passed away in 2017.
