He was born Leon Harrison Gross on April 28, 1911, and died on March 13, 1999. These strips garnered over 100 million daily readers at their peak of popularity. Falk also contributed to a series of pulp books about The Phantom, as well as short stories. Phil Davis (March 4, 1906 – December 4, 1964) was an American illustrator who worked on Mandrake the Magician from 1936 through 1964. His wife Martha Davis would frequently assist him on the strip and eventually became its co-artist; he said that she drew Mandrake's female interest and took over following Phil's death in 1964.
