Plan for Chaos by John Wyndham
In a city that could well be New York, a series of identical women are found dead in suspicious circumstances. Magazine photographer Johnny Farthing, who is reporting on the suspected murders, is chilled to discover that his fiancee looks identical to the victims too - and then she disappears.
Perhaps the best writer of science fiction England has ever produced -- Stephen King

John Wyndham (1903-69) is the legendary author of the sci-fi classics The Day of the Triffids, The Chrysalids, The Midwich Cuckoos, The Kraken Wakes, Trouble with Lichen and Chocky. When Triffids was published in 1951 he was widely hailed as HG Wells's only and true successor. In pioneering a new type of novel he called 'logical fantasy', he is credited with single-handedly reviving British interest in science fiction after the Second World War.
