Isaac Rosenberg was born in Bristol, England, in 1890 to Lithuanian Jewish immigrants. Rosenberg's family relocated to London's East End in 1897, and after a minimal education, he was apprenticed to an engraver at the age of 14. He was able to study at the Slade School of Art (1911-14) alongside Stanley Spencer and Mark Gertler, and he stayed in South Africa for nine months in 1914-15. Only three of his poems were self-published in booklet form during his lifetime: Night and Day (1912), Youth (1915), and Moses (1916). He joined the army in October 1915 and served on the Western Front until his death on 1 April 1918 while on night patrol.
