Poetry Out of My Head and Heart by Isaac Rosenberg
An astonishing discovery was made in 1995 during the British Library's removal from the British Museum. Thirty-four letters and eighteen draft poems, written by the poet and artist Isaac Rosenberg were found in a bundle of papers stored by former museum keeper Laurence Binyon, Rosenberg's mentor. This title presents these poems.Isaac Rosenberg was born in Bristol, England, in 1890 to Lithuanian Jewish immigrants. Rosenberg's family relocated to London's East End in 1897, and after a minimal education, he was apprenticed to an engraver at the age of 14. He was able to study at the Slade School of Art (1911-14) alongside Stanley Spencer and Mark Gertler, and he stayed in South Africa for nine months in 1914-15. Only three of his poems were self-published in booklet form during his lifetime: Night and Day (1912), Youth (1915), and Moses (1916). He joined the army in October 1915 and served on the Western Front until his death on 1 April 1918 while on night patrol.
