Popular Theatre in Political Culture by Tim Prentki
The first comparative study on the history and practice of popular theatre in Britain and overseas. The fragmentation of social groups in the face of the global mass media has begun to threaten the survival of popular theatre companies. This study traces the development of various types of community theatre, from the '70s to the present day. Integrating a comparative history of popular theatre with the contributions of current, active popular theatre makers, this book will appeal both to the theatrical practitioner and to the academic.
Tim Prentki is author of The Fool in European Theatre (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012) and Applied Theatre: Development (Bloomsbury, 2015). He co-authored Popular Theatre in Political Culture (Intellect, 2000). He is co-editor of The Applied Theatre Reader (Routledge, 1st ed., 2009, 2nd ed., 2021), Performance & Civic Engagement (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018) and The Routledge Companion to Applied Performance (Routledge, 2021). He is currently co-editing The Routledge Handbook of Arts and Development. His plays include Common Sense, Half Measures, Lear in Brexitland and Henry VII.
