Porsche 911 Story by Paul Frere
The Porsche 911 has been in continuous production since it was introduced in 1963. This is the story of the sports car, from the aluminium-bodied 356 models hand built just after the World War II, from which the 911 evolved, right through to a preview of the high-tech 2002 models. Topics covered include: the birth of the 911, early problems and progress; engine developments, the evolution of the transmission, handling, safety, and body developments; new running gear for the 964 and 993 series; the 911 in motor sport; Porsche genealogy for production and racing models, external identification points, and principal dimensions; evolution of the flat-six engine, which became water-cooled in 1998; and the new 911 model line-up including the hatchback-style Targa and the wide-bodied Carrera 4S expected for spring 2002.
Paul Frere - engineer, writer, and former top racing driver - has driven virtually every Porsche 911 variant. He is the author of My Life Full of Cars: Behind the wheel with the world's top motoring journalist, in which this marque features strongly. He lives in Monaco.
