Summary

The role of Elizabeth I on stage and screen has been deciphered, unravelled and decoded in a variety of forms: villainess, martyr, heroine and sometimes even comic turn. One fact, though, is clear: Elizabeth is reinterpreted in every age, and is therefore always updating, but ultimately never losing our interest.

Writer and actor Anton Burge has written ten plays championing the need of roles for women in theatre, all focusing on the lives of celebrated women of the 19th and 20th centuries. His plays include ‘Bette & Joan’, starring Greta Scacchi and Anita Dobson, and ‘Mrs. Pat’, starring Dame Penelope Keith. He is currently at work on his first contemporary play ‘Year of the Virgin’.
