Malcolm Smith was an Air Engineer Officer in the Fleet Air Arm for 30 years. He served with the 801 and 809 Buccaneer squadrons ships HMS Hermes and Ark Royal, respectively, during his varied career. He also served in the Royal Air Force with 360 (Canberra) Squadron at RAF Cottesmore for two years. He served in a number of Staff and MoD positions after a stint at the Royal Naval Air Station at Culdrose. Before retiring in 1990, he was in charge of engineering standards and practices in Small Ships' Flights (both Wasp and Lynx) and afterwards had considerable impact on aviation arrangements in aircraft capable ships. He resides in the county of Dorset.
