He decided to seek a medical degree as a result of these incidents. Cowan earned his bachelor's degree in human medicine from Michigan State University in 1984. He began an anthroposophic medical medicine in Peterborough, New Hampshire, after completing his residency in family practice at Johnson City Hospital (Johnson City, NY).
Dr. Cowan is a founding board member of the Weston A. Price Foundation and served as vice president of the Doctors Association for Anthroposophical Medicine. The Price Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to He publishes the Ask the Doctor column for the foundation's quarterly journal, Wise Traditions in Food, Farming, and the Healing Arts, and has lectured across the United States. as well as Canada.
He lives in San Francisco with his wife, Lynda Smith Cowan, and practices medicine there.
