Prairie Stories by Mike Amos
Stanley Hill Top is a former mining village on a windy ridge in Co. Durham. Once it had more than twenty shops, a thriving church, many pubs, clubs societies and a renowned football team with a glorious club house, known affectionately as "the little house on the prairie" - that's it on the cover. But in the 1970s, Durham County Council decided Stanley was no longer worthy of any investment and labelled it as Category D - an apparent death sentence that moved many residents away. Stanley survived but is much changed and this book looks at its past - especially the football club. Three times Northern League champions Stanley United once reached the FA Cup first round proper. Their ground was notoriously cold and windy, once so bad that players refused to play. All that remains now is a ragged field and some twisted goal posts. Prairie Stories paints a vivid picture of the village today. It is unique - how many villages have the world's biggest Chuckle Brothers fan? - but it is also typical, a microcosm of changing times in former pit communities.
