Pride of Peacocks by Jeanne Whitmee

Rose, an illegitimate child abandoned by her mother and brought up by a resentful aunt in an East End pub, finds a kind of liberation when war breaks out. She joins the Women's Land Army and looks forward to life in the country where she can find the sense of belonging she yearns and the love she has never known. But on her arrival at Peacock's Farm she is sadly disappointed. The farm is run down, its owner a bitter alcoholic who clearly resents her presence. But, knowing this is her only chance, Rose is determined to make the best of things and gradually edges her way into Bill Peacock's confidence convincing him that she can help to make the farm a profitable business again. Rose has inherited the challenges of Peacock's Farm, but she has also let herself in for betrayal and desolation. The future holds deceit and heartbreak and there are life-changing decisions for Rose to make before she can find true happiness.
Jeanne Whitmee originally trained as an actress and later taught Speech and Drama until taking up writing full time. She has written 28 novels and Robert Hale has published three of these, including her last, King's Walk.
