Antony Sher was born in South Africa and shot to fame as an actor for his Richard III. Other roles at the RSC include the Fool to Michael Gambon's Lear, Tamburlaine, Cyrano and Macbeth (with Harriet Walter). He has published several books, including his classic theatre book, Year of the King, a collection of his paintings and drawings and his autobiography, Beside Myself. He was knighted in 2000.
