Princes of the Church by Dominic Aidan Bellenger
Since the Middle Ages, at least 40 Englishmen have become cardinals. This work looks at the public careers of these English cardinals, their background and their private lives, to present a picture of a group of men whose spiritual and political influence on English history is far reaching.
Dominic Bellenger is a Benedictine monk of Downside Abbey. He studied history at Cambridge, where he later completed his doctorate on French ecclesiastical exiles in the British Isles during the French revolution. He has published over 100 articles in such journals as the Journal of Ecclesiastical History, Studies in Church History, Recusant History and the Downside Review. Stella Fletcher is a lecturer in history at King Alfred's College, Winchester and the author of the Longman Companion to Renaissance Europe (1999).
