He is the author of over 130 publications, including the Benjamin Cummings textbook Principles of Cell and Molecular Biology and several educational software programs. Among the honors he has received are a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Henry Russell Award, a Michigan Distinguished Service Award, several citations for outstanding teaching from the Michigan Students Association, a Thurnau Professorship, and a Best Curriculum Innovation Award from the EDUCOM Higher Education Software Awards Competition.
