The Psychology of Sustainability by Ron L Chandler
The Psychology of Sustainability: Understanding the Relationship between Self and Earth is a dynamic anthology that, through a uniquely psychological lens, provides students with insight into the connection between humans and their environment. With each chapter, the author presents students with insight to the applicability of psychological concepts for holistically resolving sustainability problems. Articles that explore the psychological underpinnings of why we behave towards each other and Earth are included in each chapter, and the author's original material allows students to contextualize those readings and inspires their critical thinking. Over the course of 10 chapters, students read about the relationship between human dignity and perceived responsibility to act sustainably, the interconnected nature of human ecology, and the effect of parenting, attachment, and social value orientation on an individual's sustainability inclination. Additional readings examine various psychological concepts, including lifespan development, environmental identity, problem-solving and the creation of new sustainability solutions, and the relationship between gratitude, kindness, and sustainability inclination. The Psychology of Sustainability is an ideal text for courses in sustainability studies, sustainability science, environmental science, built environment, and psychology.
Ron L. Chandler is a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at University of Florida. He holds a Ph.D. in educational psychology and a master's degree in limnology. After approximately 25 years of working in environmental sciences, Dr. Chandler entered academia and has been dedicated to developing the field of sustainability psychology. He is also the cofounder and president of Conservation Initiative for the Asian Elephant, a nonprofit that seeks to holistically resolve issues degrading the lives of elephants, rhinos, and tigers, and the people with whom they share habitat.
