Brian Clarke has been a fisherman all of his remembered life. He began in the time-honoured way with sticklebacks, as a boy, progressed to gudgeon, dace, chub and the occasional barbel, and then graduated (if that is the word) to trout in the mid-1960s - about the time of the explosion of interest in reservoir and other stillwater fisheries. He was invited to become Fishing Correspondent of The Sunday Times in 1975, after the paper had serialized The Pursuit of Stillwater Trout over seven successive weeks. In 1991 he was additionally appointed fishing correspondent of The Times. Brian Clarke has written a range of other books. In 1980, with John Goddard, he published The Trout and the Fly, a work that gave new insights into the way the trout sees the world and the angler from under water. In 1996 he published Trout etcetera, a collection of his journalism and essays. His novel, The Stream, which follows the impact on wild creatures when the water they all depend on is abstracted and polluted, was published in 2001. It won both the GBP5,000 BP Natural World Book Prize, Britain's top award for environmental literature and the Authors' Club Award for 'Best First Novel' by a British writer.
