Quieter Than Sleep by Joanne Dobson
The Making of Modern Law: U.S. Supreme Court Records and Briefs, 1832-1978 contains the world's most comprehensive collection of records and briefs brought before the nation's highest court by leading legal practitioners - many who later became judges and associates of the court. It includes transcripts, applications for review, motions, petitions, supplements and other official papers of the most-studied and talked-about cases, including many that resulted in landmark decisions. This collection serves the needs of students and researchers in American legal history, politics, society and government, as well as practicing attorneys. This book contains the official US Supreme Court Transcript of Record for this case. This book does not contain the Court's opinion or any filings in this case. Dobson earned a bachelor's degree in English from The King's College in New York in 1963. She went on to receive a master's degree in 1977 from the University of New York at Albany and a doctorate in 1985 from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She taught at Amherst College and Tufts University before joining Fordham University as a tenure-track professor. She was a founding editor of Legacy: A Magazine of American Women Writers and formed a academic association dedicated to Emily Dickinson. At Amherst College, she currently teaches Fulbright Fellowship International summer programs.
Karen Pelletier, an English professor at Enfield College in Enfield, Massachusetts, a fictionalized Amherst College, has been a central character in Dobson's work until recently. Pelletier is from a working-class family in Lowell, where she became an unmarried mother and estranged from her family when she was still in high school. She is involved in situations concerning manuscripts, writers, and academia, and she frequently works with the local police, particularly detective Charlie Piotrowski, with whom she develops a personal bond throughout the series. In 2012, Dobson announced a new series set in World War Two New York, written in partnership with Beverle Graves Myers and starring a seasoned homicide detective and two young women, a nurse and a reporter.
Face of the Enemy featured on the Maine Sunday Telegram's top list, and Dobson published The Kashmiri Shawl, her first historical fiction novel, in 2014.
