Race, Communication and the Caring Professions by Robinson
Little of the current social work and healthcare literature in Britain has addressed the issue of inter-ethnic communication. This book aims to provide students and practitioners with a precise framework in which to view and define the diverse factors at work during inter-ethnic communication. It examines inter-ethnic communication from a Black perspective. It discusses racial identity development and its relationship to inter-ethnic communication. It is argued that black people go through several stages of racial identity development and that one's stage of racial identity may have a stronger impact on the communication process than 'race' per se. The book analyses the way in which prejudice and stereotypes function as a barrier to effective communication between social and healthcare workers and black clients. It examines the role of Black English in inter-ethnic communication and the implications of interacting with black clients who may have English as a second language, or who may not speak English at all. The book discusses the culture-bound values of black people and their relationship to inter-ethnic communication.
"..offers insight and analysis which can usefully and rightfully inform the work of those at the coal-face of health and social services delivery...Recommended reading for purchasers and providers who wish to move beyond stereo-types and assumptions to address the community care needs of their black client populations." - Health Service Journal "...this book will be of interest to policy makers and practitioners. But the target audience...is students and teachers on courses in community care, social work, and social policy and it is for them that the book will prove to be most useful."- Community Care "...an important text for clinical practitioners and policy makers who have an interest in'race', health and community care. It is an essential text for students." - Journal of Community Nursing "This book is a good introduction to the subject and is another fine example of an Open University Press textbook." - Health Matters "...the complexities of anti-racist practise are rarely explored and addressed as authoritatively as here...It is written in an accessible style and the multi-disciplinary approach achieves a successful synthesis of theory and practice." - British Journal of Social Work"...the contributors to this volume areto be complimented for opening up a rich and complex area for debate. We all have much tolearn from them and to contribute to that debate." - Journal of Interprofessional Care
