Rail Rover: Wessex Ranger by John Dedman
Here, John Dedman and Pete Nurse look back on the heyday of the Day Ranger and Rover tickets on the South Coast, covering areas stretching between Portsmouth Harbour and Weymouth Quay. Among the photographs featured here are traditional steam workings in the early 1960s, as well as shots from the eighties that show how the experiences of the rail enthusiast changed so dramatically in the course of a few decades. As well as passenger trains, parcel, freight and special workings that would have been glimpsed by the intrepid rail rover are also featured.
John Dedman was born in Lymington, Hampshire, and both his father and his grandfather worked for British Railways on the Lymington branch, at the Pier station and on the Isle of Wight Ferry. He went to school at Brockenhurst which was next to the railway by the station where all spare time was spent watching the trains. Once he got access to a camera trains became a natural subject and he has been photographing railways in most parts of the British Isles since the mid 1970s. Pete Nurse is a transport and modelling enthusiast based in south-east England.
