The Ramage Hawk by John Pilkington
Late summer, 1590: the villagers toil to bring in the harvest - unaware of a murderer amongst them Thomas the Falconer has been loaned by his master to the impoverished Sir Giles Buckridge, who struggles with mounting debts and the inability to provide dowries for his three spirited daughters. Thomas is here to train a ramage hawk - a young, half-wild falcon - and to teach Sir Giles's young ward the arts of falconry. But no sooner has he taken up residence than Sir Giles's eldest daughter, Jane, vanishes. Small wonder if she ran away, folk murmur, since she was betrothed to a wealthy 60-year-old merchant, simply for financial reasons. Thomas is called upon to help find the missing girl, but as the body count rises and fear grips the land, the search turns into an increasingly dangerous game. Left with no option, Thomas finds himself pitted against the most fearsome adversary he has ever faced.
