Lynn H.Nicholas was born in the city of New London, Connecticut. Connecticut is a state in the United States. She obtained her B.A. after studying in the United States, England, and Spain. from the University of Oxford After returning to the United States, she worked at the National Gallery of Art for several years.

She began research for this, her first book, while living in Belgium in the early 1980s. Nicholas lives in Washington, D.C. with her spouse.
