The Ras by Tom Daly
September 1953, 52 bike riders at the GPO in Dublin, took to the roads. The Ras quickly became an enormous success. It is characterised by unconventional practice, spontaneity, grittiness, and fierceness of competition. This book captures the spirit and essence of the Ras, its historical significance and place in Irish sporting history.Tom Daly has had a long interest in sport since playing with Kerry minor footballers. In 1979 he completed the first solo circumnavigation of Ireland by kayak. Always a cyclist, he did not race until he was 42 and won an All-Ireland Veteran's team medal. He won a National Masters Track title in 2011 and raced in the World Masters Track Championships. Intrigued by the complexity of racing and the romantic spirit of the Ras, he set about documenting its history. Little did he realise the scale or richness of the story.
