The Rat-pit by Patrick Macgill
This text tells the tale of the struggle of Donegal girl Norah Ryan against poverty at the turn of the century. The name is from a lodging house where human beings, pinched and poverty-stricken and ground down with a weight of oppression, are hemmed up like the plague-stricken in a pest-house.
Patrick MacGill, ‘the Navvy Poet’ was born in Donegal in 1889 and died in Florida in 1963. He wrote a number of bestselling books (many of which are semi-autobiographical), including, Moleskin Joe, The Rat-pit and The Great Push, as well as a number of poetry collections.
