Reading Abbey by Peter Durrant

An account of the history of Reading's Abbey and the changes to its ruins and the surrounding area after the Dissolution in 1539.
Dr Peter Durrant MBE was County Archivist of Berkshire for 25 years until his retirement in 2014. He is a founder-member of the Berkshire Record Society and currently serves as the society's General Editor. He is Chairman of the Royal County of Berkshire Churches Trust, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and a past President of the Reading Branch of the Historical Association. He has been Chairman of the Friends of Reading Abbey since 2012. John Painter retired from local government following 28 years working for Reading Borough Council. He has been actively involved with the Friends of Reading Abbey from 2011, and Secretary since 2013. His motive in joining the Friends of Reading Abbey was to support the Council's efforts to consolidate the Abbey Ruins and get them re-opened to the public in plenty of time for 2021, the 900th anniversary of the Abbey's foundation.
