Reading Dance by Judith Mackrell
An eclectic mix of voices, anecdotes and illuminations on dance. It deals with the many different dance forms that can be seen in the current Western repertoire and sets them in their historical context. It also looks at the work of famous choreographers, from Petipa to Balanchine and Mark Morris, and discusses the effects created by patterns and duplications, how dancers relate to each other on stage, the origin of steps and how they fit together and the power of improvisation.
Judith Mackrell has been one of Britain's leading dance critics since 1986, writing first for the Independent and currently for The Guardian. She broadcasts regularly on television and radio, and has written several books on dance, including Reading Dance published in 1997 by Michael Joseph. Judith Mackrell's group biography Flappers: Six Women of a Dangerous Generation was published by FSG in May 2013.
