The Red Corolla by Susan Mayclin Stephenson

This is not a book to be read straight through. Rather it is a reference book to be consulted by parents and teachers wishing to round out their own general knowledge, and their methods of sharing the world of biology, the arts, physics, history, and geography, with children. Basic principles, such as the creation of practical life work, sensorial experiences, and language, are repeated within each section so that the adult can focus on one area of culture at a time. Although the main emphasis is on the child from age 3-6 years, there is also reference to other stages of development. The Montessori glossary is extensive and helpful and there are two articles, previously published in international Montessori journals, that help the reader fully understand the concept of cosmic education, which is a method of connecting all aspects of culture, and life in its fullness, in preparation for the human being to find his or her own productive and enjoyable place in the whole.

The author's books are always about making children's and their families' life happier, more interesting, and rewarding, and tailored to each child's developmental stage. Her background in this field is diverse and international. Susan Mayclin Stephenson traveled and studied the civilizations of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia for four months onboard the first university on a ship, now known as The Semester at Sea, in 1963-1964. This sparked a lifelong fascination with cultural differences and parallels, particularly in the area of parenting. Susan worked as a counselor in a juvenile detention center after graduating from San Francisco State University with a double concentration in philosophy and comparative religions.

It was her work with these disturbed young people, who came from both the poorest and wealthiest neighborhoods in San Francisco, that convinced her that the greatest way to realize one's and society's potential is to start as early as possible. Susan graduated from the Maria Montessori Institute (MMI) in London, UK, with a 2.5-6 diploma, and the Washington Montessori Institute (WMI) in Washington, DC, with a 6-12 diploma. She received the 0-3, or Assistants to Infancy (A to I) diploma at The Montessori Institute (TMI) in Denver, Colorado, finished a master's degree in education at Loyola University Maryland, and attended a course on multiple intelligences from Howard Gardner, Harvard University Graduate School of Education, after teaching children from the ages of 2 to 13. Her two children enrolled in the Montessori Assistants to Infancy program so that they could be the best parents they could be.

Susan has visited over 60 countries and frequently expresses her impressions of these places via her art, the most of which are oil paintings that can be found on her website. She's worked with parents and teachers, documented children's developmental stages, advised schools, and assessed Montessori training courses. Susan is also the author of Child of the World: Montessori, Global Education for Children Ages 3 to 12.
