Whitman served as the Director of Vocational Education for the Burlington Public Schools in Burlington, Vermont, for eight years after teaching drawing courses for three years.

He was the Associate Director of Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Carolina, for five years. Whitman spent 18 years as the director of Central Piedmont Community College's Department of Industry in Charlotte, North Carolina.
