Refusal Shoes by Tony Saint
Henry Brinks is an immigration officer at a London airport ? God help him. He?s surrounded by drunks and thieves, bigots and maniacs and that?s just his workmates. Throw into the mix an endless stream of scammers, chancers and desperadoes plus a Chinese triad killer with a dodgy passport and Henry?s day at work could hardly get any worse. Tony Saint (himself a former immigration officer) has written a remarkable debut novel that is both a first-class thriller and a disturbingly funny expose set in the hidden world of the immigration service, a place where the ill-assorted staff have extraordinary powers and limitless potential for corruption. Forget the pieties of liberals or the foamings of the rightwing press, this is the real story of life on the front line of the immigration business.
?Refusal Shoes comes on like a cross between Airport and League of Gentlemen.. Saint writes some very funny dialogue and offers sharp observation? Independent on Sunday ?Part thriller, part expos?, Refusal Shoes is refreshingly politically incorrect and wickedly funny? Observer ?An amusing satirical thriller that provides an eye-popping glimpse behind the immigration desks at Heathrow. It shocks in more ways than one? Sunday Telegraph
