He began covering urban and economic reconstruction efforts in Detroit and Michigan for the Detroit Free Press in 1987, a position he currently holds. Great Architecture of Michigan is one of his other publications, as is AIA Detroit: The American Institute of Architects Guide to Detroit Architecture, which he co-authored. John and his wife, Sheu-Jane, live on the east bank of the Detroit River.
