'The latest edition of this practical introduction to the basics of reliabilty, maintainability and safety introduces new sections on the accuracy of reliability prediction methods, common cause failures in systems, and expands and updates the descriptions of recent safety standards, in particular ISO 61508 and the use of 'Safety Integrity Levels' (SILs)The book remains a good basic introduction.' Quality and Reliabilty Engineering International, Feb. 2002 Having worked in this field for a number of years, I can honestly say that Dr. Smith has provided a perfect means of understanding the principles behind basic reliability calculations, in a way that is neither condescending nor unnecessarily complex. I recommend this book in the strongest possible terms to readers interested in gaining a greater understanding of the world of reliability engineering without having to trawl through pages of postgraduate mathematics. Customer review on Amazon 26/4/99 ...it covers enough statistics and basic reliability engineering principles that engineers from various disciplines can benefit from it. This book would make a good reference guide. -Quality Progress Engineers can evaluate power quality and reliability risks using a number of mathematical methods that help determine the areas of vulnerability at a given site. For this reason, Reliability, Maintainability and Risk, 6th Edition, by Dr. David J. Smith, is a highly useful and informative text. -Power Quality, June 2002
